Biography

Dr. Shaodan Zhang is an accomplished ophthalmologist specializing in glaucoma-related optic nerve injury and protection. She completed her doctorate in ophthalmology and postdoctoral studies at Peking University. She is an associate professor and chief physician at Wenzhou Medical University, where she advances both foundational and clinical research in glaucoma. Dr. Zhang has served as a visiting scholar at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Pennsylvania State University.

Her work focuses on opportunistic screening models for glaucoma in large populations and exploring the mechanisms of neurodegeneration in glaucoma. She was the first to identify altered vascular reactivity of the posterior cerebral artery in glaucoma patients and investigate the role of astrocytes in retinal ganglion cell loss. These findings provide vital evidence for developing neuroprotection strategies targeting glial cells and safeguarding the entire visual pathway. Dr. Zhang has been the principal investigator for multiple national and provincial research projects, including grants from the National Natural Science Foundation. She has published over 70 academic papers and contributes as a committee member and editor in several professional organizations.
