Biography

Dr. Wencan Wu is a distinguished professor, chief physician, and Vice President of Wenzhou Medical University. He serves as a PhD and postdoctoral advisor. Dr. Wu is an esteemed fellow at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in the United States and a visiting scholar at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia. Known as the founder of international minimally invasive ophthalmic and nasal surgery, he has pioneered advancements in precise orbital minimally invasive surgery and optic nerve repair. As the Chief Scientist for China’s “13th Five-Year” and “14th Five-Year” national key R&D plans, he has achieved international acclaim for his groundbreaking contributions to optic nerve diseases, complex orbital tumors, and intricate lacrimal duct disorders, earning him the title "World's Leading Expert in Ophthalmic Endoscopy."

Dr. Wu led the establishment of an organized research system focusing on optic nerve injury and regeneration, creating innovative minimally invasive intervention systems for optic nerve diseases. He performed over 8,000 ETOCD procedures, a global record. His achievements include publishing China's expert consensus on endoscopic transnasal optic canal decompression for traumatic optic neuropathy and authoring the book Minimally Invasive Ophthalmic and Nasal Surgery. His research integrates medical engineering, clinical, and fundamental studies, addressing critical challenges such as optic nerve regeneration. His team has developed technologies such as bio-inspired optic nerve regeneration microtubules, pioneered aptamer-targeted therapies, and introduced 3D orbital surgical navigation systems.
